Mild tremors were felt in Islamabad, Peshawar, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and Swat on Tuesday morning after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck with its epicenter in southeastern Afghanistan, at a depth of around 22 kilometers, according to the Seismological Center.
As the tremors rippled through the region, residents rushed out of their homes and shops in panic, reciting prayers while gathering in open spaces.
The fresh jolt comes only hours after a powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake rattled Afghanistan late on August 31. That quake, centered in Kunar province at a depth of 15 kilometers, left widespread destruction in its wake. So far, more than 1,411 people have been confirmed dead, with thousands of others injured — a toll that officials fear may continue to rise as rescue operations progress.
