Research has revealed that people who drink coffee may have a lower risk of developing various liver diseases.
According to research conducted by the Universities of Southampton and Edinburgh, the consumption of all types of coffee reduces the likelihood of developing severe or chronic liver diseases. The greatest benefit was observed among those who drank three to four cups of coffee daily.
Coffee drinkers had about a 21% lower risk of chronic liver disease and about a 20% lower risk of fatty liver disease, while the risk of death from other liver related diseases was found to be around 49% lower.
One study found that coffee consumption significantly reduces the chances of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Those who drank small or moderate amounts of coffee had a lower likelihood of cirrhosis compared to non drinkers.
In addition, a negative association was found between coffee consumption and the risk of liver cancer. People who drink more coffee are less likely to develop liver cancer.
