Greece has announced a major change in its school curriculum with the introduction of a new subject titled “Ethics,” replacing Religious Studies for students who choose to opt out of the traditional course. The Ministry of Education confirmed the decision through Gazette 6259/21.11.2025.

Starting from the 2026–2027 academic year, Ethics will be taught from 3rd grade up to the final year of high school. The teaching hours will be equal to those allocated for Religious Studies, ensuring a balanced academic structure.

The Ministry of Education, Religion, and Sports aims to offer a subject with a broader European and international outlook. This course is designed specifically for students who do not wish to attend Religious Studies classes.

According to the official curriculum, the Ethics course will focus on social, philosophical, and existential topics. High school students will also be introduced to ethical reasoning and argumentation, encouraging critical thinking on open-ended issues.
