HBO has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, reigniting excitement across the Game of Thrones fandom ahead of its January 2025 premiere on HBO and HBO Max.
The trailer, revealed during New York Comic Con, offers fans a thrilling glimpse into Westeros set a hundred years before Game of Thrones and seventy years after House of the Dragon. The series adapts George R. R. Martin’s beloved Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, following the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) and his young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen.
Packed with jousting scenes, muddy battlefields, and flashes of Targaryen silver, the teaser promises a more down-to-earth and emotionally rich story. Showrunner Ira Parker describes the series as a “gritty medieval tale” focused on ordinary people’s courage, loyalty, and survival rather than royal power struggles.
Author George R. R. Martin, serving as both executive producer and writer, revealed that this prequel will carry a lighter tone than its predecessors but will still hold the franchise’s signature tension and unpredictability reminding viewers that “in Westeros, no one is truly safe.”
The cast also features Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a Dornish puppeteer.
Early reactions to the trailer have been overwhelmingly positive, with fans praising its grounded tone reminiscent of the early seasons of Game of Thrones. With its focus on humanity, honour, and the harsh realities of knighthood, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already being hailed as one of the most awaited television events of 2025.
