Headline: Virat Kohli ruled out of Afghanistan ODI series with recurring injury

Virat Kohli will miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan after failing to recover from a recurring lower-back strain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development Tuesday morning, leaving the team management to scramble for a replacement in the middle order.

The injury flared up during the final day of the recent Test series, forcing the star batter to undergo scans in Mumbai. While team doctors initially hoped for a quick recovery, medical reports suggest the inflammation requires at least three weeks of rest to prevent a long-term setback.

For the BCCI, the timing is poor. Kohli’s absence leaves a gaping hole in a lineup already grappling with consistency issues. With the World Cup cycle intensifying, the selection committee now faces the pressure of testing bench strength against an Afghanistan side that has repeatedly proven it can dismantle top-tier bowling attacks.

“It’s a blow, certainly,” a team source close to the selection committee told reporters. “You don’t replace a player of Virat’s caliber. We’re looking at options, but the focus remains on ensuring he’s fully fit for the tour of Australia.”

The medical team has advised a strict rehabilitation protocol, including physiotherapy and a gradual return to high-intensity training. Kohli is expected to remain at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for the duration of his recovery.

His absence shifts the burden onto the top order. Without Kohli’s ability to anchor the innings and navigate middle-over pressure, the remaining batters must step up. The selectors are expected to announce a replacement within 24 hours, with younger prospects likely to get the nod to prove their mettle on the international stage.

The series opener is slated for Friday in Mohali. With one of the game’s greatest match-winners sidelined, the pitch at the PCA Stadium will now serve as a high-stakes audition for the next generation of Indian cricket.
