nseen Side Effects of Sunscreen You Should Know

Sunscreen is considered a non-negotiable part of skincare, protecting against harmful UV rays, premature ageing, and even skin cancer. But while dermatologists stress its importance, not every sunscreen formula is risk-free. Experts warn that some products may trigger unexpected side effects beyond the occasional rash.

According to a report by HealthShots and insights from cosmetologist Dr. Mahnaz Jahan Begum, certain sunscreen ingredients and formulations can cause problems ranging from irritation to pigmentation.

Potential Side Effects of Sunscreen

🔹 Skin Irritation
Chemical sunscreens and those with added fragrances may cause redness, itching, or stinging, especially in people with sensitive skin.

🔹 Allergic Reactions
Ingredients like oxybenzone and preservatives can lead to rashes, hives, or swelling in sensitive individuals. Hypoallergenic formulas are often recommended.

🔹 Breakouts
Thick or oil-based sunscreens can clog pores, triggering pimples or blackheads, particularly in oily or acne-prone skin types.

🔹 Eye Irritation
If sunscreen enters the eyes, it can cause burning, redness, and watering. Experts advise using special formulations around the eye area.

🔹 Photosensitivity
In rare cases, sunscreen chemicals may increase sensitivity to sunlight rather than reduce it, leading to redness, rashes, or sunburn.

🔹 Worsened Hyperpigmentation
Some sunscreens with fragrance or alcohol can aggravate dark spots or melasma, especially in melanin-rich skin tones. Dermatologists recommend iron oxide–based sunscreens for extra protection against visible light.

🔹 Vitamin D Concerns
Since sunscreen blocks UVB rays, some worry about reduced vitamin D absorption. However, the Skin Cancer Organization notes that scientific evidence does not show a strong link between sunscreen use and vitamin D deficiency.

Bottom Line

Sunscreen remains essential for skin protection, but experts advise choosing formulations carefully—preferably broad-spectrum, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and suited to individual skin types. Selecting the right sunscreen can help maximize protection while minimizing side effects.
