Karachi to Turn Colder from December 8 as Northwestern Winds Strengthen

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a noticeable drop in Karachi’s temperature starting December 8, as cold northwesterly winds move into the city, slightly intensifying winter conditions.

According to PMD officials, a western weather system currently affecting northern Pakistan and parts of Balochistan is expected to cause a decline of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in Karachi’s temperature from Monday. While the system is not strong enough to trigger a full cold wave, it is likely to increase the chill, particularly during the night and early morning hours.

The Chief Meteorologist of Karachi explained that the colder air developing over Balochistan due to the western disturbance will partially reach Karachi. As a result, northeasterly winds flowing from Balochistan are expected to enhance the cold feel across the city over the coming days.

Despite the incoming cold air, meteorologists have clarified that no severe cold wave is expected before mid-December. The city’s minimum temperature is forecast to remain between 12°C and 14°C, while the maximum may fluctuate between 27°C and 29°C. PMD has also confirmed that no rainfall is expected in Karachi at present, even though western systems have entered the country.

Earlier this week, Karachi already experienced a spell of colder weather when strong chilly winds swept through the city, bringing a sharp drop in temperature. On that day, the lowest temperature of 8.9°C was recorded at Jinnah Terminal, which was the coldest point in the city. Other areas also reported low temperatures, with Bin Qasim at 12.1°C, Old Airport at 12.5°C, and Shahrah-e-Faisal and Maripur at 13.5°C.

The PMD further reported that winds blowing from the northeastern side of Balochistan reached speeds of up to 25 kilometres per hour, contributing significantly to the sudden drop in temperature. On the same day, Karachi recorded a maximum temperature of 28.4°C, showing a wide gap between daytime and nighttime conditions.

Weather officials have advised residents, especially children and the elderly, to take basic precautions as temperatures continue to gradually decline over the next few days.
