The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced plans to introduce the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2026 for matriculation and intermediate classes from the 2027 academic year, bringing significant changes to the province’s education system.
Under the new policy, students from classes 9 to 12 will follow the revised national curriculum. All public and private schools will be required to use textbooks approved by the relevant education authorities.
The revised curriculum will cover English, Urdu, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology and Physics for classes 9 to 12. General Science will be included only for classes 9 and 10.
The Directorate of Curriculum and Teacher Education (DCTE) has issued instructions regarding the implementation of the updated curriculum. The KP Private Schools Regulatory Authority has also directed private educational institutions across the province to follow the new requirements.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board will prepare new textbooks or revise existing ones according to the updated curriculum. All educational boards in the province will also conduct examinations based on the revised syllabus.
Under the new rules, textbooks developed or revised according to the National Curriculum 2026 must receive prior approval from the Directorate of Curriculum and Teacher Education.
Private publishers will also need official approval or a No Objection Certificate (NOC) before publishing textbooks and supplementary study materials for classes 9 to 12.
School principals have been instructed to review the new directives and complete the necessary preparations before the 2027 academic session begins.
Authorities have warned that schools, publishers and other institutions failing to follow the new curriculum and textbook regulations could face legal action under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Supervision of Curricula, Textbooks and Maintenance of Standards of Education Act, 2011.
The decision will require schools, textbook publishers and examination boards to update their educational materials and examination systems according to the revised national curriculum before the new academic year.
