A new study has found that some screen time can actually be beneficial for children.
A mobile screen is something no child seems willing to put down, and most parents remain concerned about this. However, new research has shown that it is not as harmful as it is often considered.
Researchers at the University of South Australia analyzed data from more than 133,000 children and adolescents under the age of 18.
The study revealed that 10 to 20 minutes of health related digital tools, mobile apps, fitness trackers, and online programs in the form of screen time can be useful for children and adolescents.
The research stated that most young people know the importance of healthy eating, regular exercise, and proper sleep, but they do not adopt these habits, which increases their risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
Researchers suggested that digital tools should be included in schools and community centers to promote healthy habits.
The proposal stated that these tools will help improve children’s physical activity, diet, and weight, and will reduce poor eating habits, inactivity, and excessive sedentary time.
Although the study did not show a significant improvement in sleep, the overall results were positive. A short (8 week) program was found effective for increasing physical activity, while a longer (12 week) program was effective for weight loss.
Globally, inactivity and obesity among children are increasing at an alarming rate. Researchers said that since children today are accustomed to technology, using such tools will be easy and engaging for them.
