A tragic incident occurred during a kabaddi tournament in Mohali, Punjab, where unidentified assailants shot dead a kabaddi player after approaching him on the pretext of taking a selfie.
According to Indian police, the victim was identified as Rana Balachauria. Reports say that two to three individuals arrived at the kabaddi ground on a motorcycle, went near the players pretending to take pictures, and suddenly opened fire on Rana Balachauria.
He was hit by four to five bullets to the face and upper body. The injured player was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.
Police stated that the attackers used the selfie excuse to get close before firing indiscriminately. Investigations are ongoing from multiple angles, and it is too early to reach any final conclusion.
The area has been cordoned off and evidence is being collected. Authorities are also probing the incident as a possible gang-related attack. Meanwhile, the notorious Bambiha gang has claimed responsibility on social media, alleging that Rana Balachauria had sheltered the killers of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala and was linked to rival groups of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Lawrence Bishnoi.
