WWE has officially confirmed that 17-time world champion John Cena will compete in his final in-ring match on December 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The farewell clash will feature Cena against Gunther, who secured the coveted spot by defeating LA Knight in the final of “The Last Time is Now” tournament on the December 5 episode of SmackDown.
The month-long, 16-man tournament was specifically created to determine Cena’s last opponent, and Gunther — widely regarded as one of the most technically accomplished wrestlers of his generation — entered as the clear favourite. His victory not only lived up to expectations but further reinforced his growing legacy as a performer who delivers on the biggest stages.
Gunther’s reputation as a “legend closer” has already been written into WWE history. Earlier this year, he oversaw Goldberg’s final appearance at July’s Saturday Night’s Main Event — a match that symbolically transferred the mantle of dominance. Should he now add Cena’s name to that record, the Austrian standout will cement himself as one of the defining figures of modern WWE.
All eyes now turn toward December 13, where Cena’s final walk to the ring will mark the end of one of professional wrestling’s most decorated and era-defining careers.
