Peshawar: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl) has emerged as the largest opposition party in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) withdrew its candidate for a reserved seat for minorities.
On Thursday, PML-N withdrew its nominee Gorsaran Lal in favor of JUI-F’s Gorpal Singh, enabling the latter to be officially notified as MPA-elect by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
In a separate development, ANP’s Shahida Waheed won a women’s reserved seat through a draw against PTI-Parliamentarians’ candidate, Somi. This also added one more seat to ANP’s tally in the KP Assembly.
With these outcomes, JUI-F now holds 18 seats in the KP Assembly, making it the largest party in the opposition. PML-N holds 17 seats, PPP 10, ANP 4, and PTI-P 3 — bringing the opposition total to 52 seats.
Out of the 26 seats reserved for women in the assembly, JUI-F and PML-N each have 9 seats, PPP has 5, ANP 2, and PTI-P holds 1. For the 4 seats reserved for minorities, JUI-F holds 2, while PML-N and PPP have 1 each.
Currently, Dr. Ibadullah from PML-N serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the KP Assembly. PTI-backed lawmakers retain their 92-seat strength, maintaining their majority.
