KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that Karachi may experience heavy rains from August 30 to September 2, raising the risk of urban flooding in the city.
The forecast suggests that thunderstorms and downpours could also hit Islamabad between August 29 and September 2, while northern and north-eastern Punjab districts including Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Hafizabad, and Mandi Bahauddin are likely to receive heavy rainfall on August 30 and 31.
The alert comes just a week after Karachi was battered by torrential rain that left the city paralyzed. Streets turned into rivers, boats were deployed to rescue stranded families, and widespread flooding damaged roads and infrastructure. The downpour claimed 15 lives, destroyed homes and livelihoods, and caused prolonged power outages across multiple neighborhoods.
More than 200 millimetres of rain was recorded in the last spell, leaving behind sewage mixed stagnant water and broken road networks. Citizens continue to struggle with the aftermath, as daily life remains disrupted.
Authorities have urged Karachi residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary movement, and prepare for possible emergencies during the upcoming rains.
