Heavy rains lashed Karachi on Wednesday, causing Thado Dam to overflow and triggering floods in the Malir and Lyari rivers. The surging water entered nearby residential areas, leaving several neighborhoods submerged.
Scheme 33, Jamali Bridge, and sections of the M-9 Motorway have been among the worst affected. According to the Sindh government, water from Thado Dam reached the M-9, forcing authorities to breach part of the motorway’s divider wall to allow water to flow naturally and prevent further damage.
Rescue teams reported that many families remain stranded, with water levels rising several feet in some areas. Boats are being used to evacuate residents to safety. Two people trapped near Lyari River in Gulshan-e-Iqbal were successfully rescued.
Karachi’s commissioner has announced the closure of all schools across the city today as a precautionary measure.
Local residents blame poor drainage systems and unchecked urban development for worsening the crisis. Many are urging the government to take both immediate relief measures and long-term planning to ensure the city does not face such a recurring disaster every monsoon season.
