Karachi Kings bring back Jason Roy after Muhammad Waseem’s exit

Karachi Kings have signed England opener Jason Roy as a replacement for Muhammad Waseem, who left the squad because of UAE national duty during the ongoing Pakistan Super League 2026. Recent reporting says Waseem was released after being called back by the Emirates setup, leaving Karachi to plug a gap in their top order.

The move feels familiar, in a way. Roy isn’t walking into unknown territory here — he has already spent time with Karachi Kings in earlier PSL seasons, and that gives the franchise a fairly ready-made replacement rather than a gamble on someone needing time to settle. Karachi had originally included Muhammad Waseem in their 2026 squad, so this is less a tactical reshuffle and more an enforced adjustment in the middle of the tournament.

Waseem’s departure had left Karachi a bit exposed. Reports around the recall said UAE players involved in the PSL were asked to return for domestic and national commitments back home, which affected Karachi’s options and forced the franchise to move quickly. In that sense, Roy’s arrival is about immediate availability as much as batting firepower.

For Karachi Kings, the attraction is obvious. Roy brings experience, tempo, and the kind of top-order intent that can change the shape of a T20 innings in a few overs. He’s the sort of batter who can make a powerplay feel very short for the opposition. That doesn’t guarantee runs, of course — nothing in T20 does — but it does give Karachi a more proven international option at a point in the season when teams usually don’t want to be experimenting. The Kings remain part of the PSL 2026 competition, which is running from March 26 to May 3, so squad depth and timely replacements matter more now than they did at the auction table.

There is one twist, though. Some later reports said Muhammad Waseem had rejoined Karachi Kings for the remainder of PSL 11, which suggests the squad situation may have been more fluid than it first appeared. Based on the latest reporting tied to your headline, Roy was signed as Waseem’s replacement after the UAE call-up, but the broader availability picture seems to have shifted over time.

Still, the headline stands because it captures the key development cleanly: Karachi needed a replacement, and they turned to Jason Roy. It’s a practical signing, not a flashy one for the sake of headlines. And honestly, in the middle of a PSL campaign, that’s usually the smarter kind.
