The air quality in Karachi has reached alarming levels, with the latest data indicating that the city has become the second most polluted major city in the world.
According to the Swiss air-quality monitor IQAir, Karachi’s air currently remains far beyond safe limits, dominated by fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and other pollutants that pose serious health risks.
Health experts are warning that vulnerable groups children, the elderly and people with respiratory issues are now at elevated risk while the city endures this episode of hazardous air.
The causes of this spike are multiple. Vehicle emissions, dusty roads, industrial output and stagnant air during colder weather all contribute to the smog that sits over the city.
