KARACHI:

Air pollution in Karachi has intensified sharply, pushing the city to third place among the world’s most polluted urban centers. According to the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) report, Karachi recorded a hazardous reading of 225, placing it in the “Very Unhealthy” category. Experts warn that such pollution levels can cause severe health problems, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Data shows that the concentration of PM2.5 the fine particulate matter most harmful to human health has risen to 150.2 µg/m³, several times higher than the World Health Organization’s safe standard. Environmental analysts attribute the spike to vehicle emissions, industrial discharge, and open waste burning, which continue to worsen air quality across the metropolis.

Health authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities. People who must go outside are advised to wear N95 or anti-smog masks. Meanwhile, environmental groups are calling on the government to implement stricter air pollution controls and launch emergency measures to curb Karachi’s growing smog crisis.
