Karachi Metropolitan University on Saturday inaugurated a dedicated Girls Common Room to improve student welfare and provide female students with a safe and supportive space on campus. The facility was jointly opened by Dr. Noman Ahsan, Secretary of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, and Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Wasim Qazi.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Wasim Qazi said modern universities must go beyond teaching and research by addressing students’ everyday needs. He noted that the Girls Common Room reflects the university’s commitment to strengthening student support systems and ensuring female students have facilities that protect their dignity, wellbeing, and academic focus.

Dr. Noman Ahsan praised the initiative, stating that improving education standards also requires providing a safe and facilitative environment for students. He said the step taken by Karachi Metropolitan University will boost the confidence and academic engagement of female students and sets a positive example for other institutions.

The newly established Girls Common Room includes comfortable seating, private study corners, lockers, mobile charging points, and information displays. A dedicated prayer area has also been provided so students can quietly reflect or offer prayers between classes.

The inauguration comes during a broader period of institutional development at Karachi Metropolitan University, which became a full-fledged university in August 2024. Since then, the administration has introduced several reforms including computerized examinations, staff capacity building, improved administrative systems, and timely salary disbursement.

Campus facilities have also been upgraded with a newly developed library, additional washrooms, and the installation of a Reverse Osmosis plant to provide clean drinking water for students and staff.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Riffat Farrukh, principal of Karachi Medical and Dental College, along with deans, department chairpersons, faculty members, administrative officers, and students. Students welcomed the initiative, saying the space will allow them to rest, study, and feel more comfortable on campus.

University officials said the facility not only meets a practical need but also reflects the institution’s commitment to creating an inclusive and student-centered academic environment.
