Low Fat Vegan Diets Beneficial for Diabetes Patients: Study

A new study has found that adopting a low fat vegan diet can reduce the daily insulin requirement in patients with type 1 diabetes by nearly 30 percent.

‎Insulin is a hormone that helps remove glucose, a type of sugar, from the blood and delivers it to muscle and liver cells, where it is used as energy. Patients with type 1 diabetes require insulin injections because their bodies do not produce an adequate amount of insulin.

‎In the study, researchers also compared the effects of a low fat vegan diet with a portion controlled diet.

‎The results showed that individuals who followed a vegan diet experienced a 28 percent reduction in their total daily insulin requirement, averaging 12.1 units, while no significant change was observed in the control group.
