KARACHI – Veteran Pakistani actor Maqsood Akhtar has expressed concern over what he describes as a growing Western influence on the country’s television dramas, claiming that some foreign organizations are allegedly funding content based on specific themes.
In a recent interview, Akhtar reflected on the changing trends in Pakistan’s drama industry, saying he has witnessed various phases throughout his long career. However, he believes the current direction of storytelling is “deeply concerning,” as it increasingly mirrors Western styles and values.
The actor pointed out that classic Pakistani dramas were once known for their realism and strong narratives. Later, digest-based stories became popular, bringing gradual changes to storytelling. “But now,” he said, “the situation has moved far beyond that.”
He alleged that certain Western institutions are providing financial support for dramas focusing on particular subjects, promoting ideas and behaviors that contradict Pakistan’s social and cultural traditions.
Akhtar stressed the need for serious discussion on this trend, urging writers, producers, and policymakers to safeguard the identity and integrity of Pakistani television content.
