Australia have been dealt a big blow just days before their T20 series against New Zealand, with star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell forced out after suffering a fractured forearm in a freak training accident.
The Unlucky Incident
The injury happened during nets at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval. Maxwell, who was batting at the time, was struck on the wrist by a powerful shot from teammate Mitchell Owen in an adjacent net.
Matthew Short, training nearby, recalled the moment:
“I saw Mitch smoke one, and the next thing I saw was Maxi on the ground holding his wrist. It didn’t sound good at all.”
Scans later confirmed the worst — a fracture in his forearm — ruling him out of the three-match series that kicks off Wednesday. Cricket Australia has confirmed Maxwell will return home immediately for further assessment.
Squad Shuffle
To cover the gap, selectors have called up wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe, who has been in solid touch recently on the Australia A tour of India. While Philippe brings batting depth, Maxwell’s absence leaves a noticeable hole — not just for his explosive middle-order hitting, but also his handy off-spin.
Why It Matters
Maxwell’s latest setback adds to a string of odd and frustrating injuries that have disrupted his career in recent years. And the timing couldn’t be worse for Australia, who are also managing fitness concerns for several other key players as they prepare for a busy home summer and next year’s T20 World Cup.
For skipper Mitch Marsh and coach Andrew McDonald, it means recalibrating balance and game plans just days before facing a full-strength New Zealand side at home.
What’s Next
The three T20s are scheduled for Mount Maunganui on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, before Australia host India later this year. Whether Maxwell recovers in time for those matches — and how his absence impacts Australia’s T20 World Cup build-up — remains to be seen.
For now, though, the Aussies will have to do it the hard way in New Zealand — without one of their most dynamic match-winners.
