In a tragic development from Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, the car of a missing private TV anchor, who disappeared during a flash flood, has been recovered from the debris on Babusar Road, authorities confirmed.
According to Faizullah Firaq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, search operations have intensified along the Babusar highway, where nearly 15 tourists were swept away by floodwaters in recent days.
During the operation, the anchor’s vehicle was found buried under mud and debris, but no one was inside. The search for the anchor, her family, and other missing tourists is ongoing.
The GB government spokesperson added that the flood-hit Babusar-Naran Highway has been reopened after a week and is now functional for one-way traffic. He advised travelers to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.
In an earlier flash flood in Thak Nullah near Chilas, 10 people lost their lives. The spokesperson confirmed that the missing anchor has been identified as Shabana Liaquat, a journalist with a private TV channel. The channel had reached out to authorities after she went missing.
A purse belonging to Shabana Liaquat was also recovered from the Babusar area by local volunteers. The purse contained her national identity card, confirming her presence in the area during the disaster.
Authorities are now using sniffer dogs and drones to aid the search. Teams from the police, local administration, disaster management, and rescue services are actively involved in the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.
