Islamabad : The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a hydrological alert for the lower reaches of the Indus River, warning of rising water levels at Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri barrages that could trigger severe flooding in the coming days.

According to a detailed report released by NDMA’s National Emergency Operations Center, water levels in the Chenab River at Trimmu, Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad have receded to normal. However, at Panjnad, a high flood persists with a flow of 308,000 cusecs. The situation has left several districts of South Punjab — including Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Alipur, Seetpur, Liaquatpur, Uch Sharif, and Ahmedpur East — under severe stress from flooding.

For the Indus, the situation at Tarbela and Taunsa remains stable, but Guddu Barrage is currently experiencing a high flood with 635,000 cusecs. This surge is expected to reach Sukkur within the next 2–3 days and Kotri between September 24 and 26. Forecasts suggest Kotri may face flows rising to between 400,000 and 445,000 cusecs.

As of now, Sukkur Barrage is witnessing a medium flood at 538,000 cusecs, while Kotri Barrage is at a low flood with 278,000 cusecs.

NDMA cautioned that due to increased inflows from eastern rivers, the lower Indus may experience dangerous conditions between the next 24 hours and September 17. Authorities are preparing for large-scale evacuations from vulnerable areas to prevent casualties.

The report further highlighted that nearly 2.7 million people in Punjab and 1.6 million in Sindh have already been relocated to safer locations. On the Prime Minister’s instructions, civil and military institutions are jointly conducting rescue and relief operations across affected regions.

Citizens in high-risk zones have been urged to comply with evacuation orders, avoid unnecessary travel, keep emergency kits ready, and safeguard important documents. NDMA has also advised the public to use its “Disaster Alert App” for timely guidance and updates.
