NEW DELHI, August 28, 2025 — Indian law enforcement on Thursday arrested a nine-person gang in Bihar’s Champaran district accused of staging sham weddings to swindle unsuspecting victims out of their valuables.
Police say four female suspects posed as prospective brides to low-income grooms, only to seize their gold ornaments, cash and other prized possessions before vanishing. Investigators further revealed that some of the women were already married, exploiting their targets’ trust with false promises of lifelong commitment.
Acting on an anonymous tip, officers raided a safe house in Minatand, detaining alleged ringleader Ali Ahmed along with eight accomplices, four of whom are women. During the operation, police recovered one car, two motorcycles and nine mobile phones linked to the fraud.
Authorities believe the syndicate operated for months across the towns of Buxar and Bettiah. The probe is now expanding to uncover any affiliations with larger criminal networks, and the public is urged to report dubious marriage proposals immediately.
