ISLAMABAD: Despite spending billions of rupees every year on its immunization program, Pakistan is still short of achieving full vaccine coverage for children.
According to Dr. Sofia, Director General of Immunization, even large global health programs have not fully hit the 100% mark. However, she noted progress over the years, saying, “A few years ago, our national average was just 54%. Now we are aiming to go beyond 95%,” as per SamaaTV.
The latest official data shows that Islamabad and Punjab are leading with 90% coverage. Sindh has reached 84%, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 79%, while Balochistan remains far behind at only 54%.
District Health Officer Islamabad, Dr. Rashida Syed, praised the city’s consistent performance. “We crossed 90% due to regular efforts and political support. We hope to reach full coverage soon,” she said.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Mukhtar Bharath, said Punjab is close to the goal, but other provinces still need major improvement. “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan face serious challenges. Until every province reaches at least 90%, controlling diseases will be difficult,” he added.
