Islamabad — Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday commended the World Bank for its principled support of Pakistan’s stance on the Indus Waters Treaty in the face of India’s unilateral and unlawful actions. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to upholding international law, promoting prosperity, and ensuring regional peace through dialogue and cooperation.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister made these remarks during a meeting with Mr. Ousmane Dione, the World Bank’s Regional Vice President for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAAP), held in Islamabad.

PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s longstanding partnership with Pakistan, especially acknowledging World Bank President Ajay Banga and former Country Director Najy Benhassine for their key role in advancing Pakistan’s new Country Partnership Framework (CPF). He highlighted the CPF’s strategic importance in supporting reforms in vital sectors such as energy, human development, climate change, and governance.

Addressing the Indus Waters Treaty, the Prime Minister praised the World Bank for standing by Pakistan’s legitimate position against India’s attempts to undermine the integrity of a crucial international agreement. He emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering resolve to resolve all issues through peaceful means and constructive dialogue.

PM Shehbaz also thanked the World Bank for its timely and generous assistance during the devastating floods of 2022, which enabled Pakistan to initiate swift relief, reconstruction, and rehabilitation efforts.

During the meeting, Mr. Dione thanked the Prime Minister for the warm hospitality extended to him during his visit and reiterated the World Bank’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Pakistan. He acknowledged Pakistan’s macroeconomic recovery and praised the government’s ongoing reform agenda, noting the administration’s efforts to stabilize the economy and promote sustainable development.

Mr. Dione also lauded the Prime Minister’s leadership in advancing institutional reforms, restoring investor confidence, and fostering inclusive economic growth.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration in the coming years to achieve long-term development goals and build a prosperous future for the people of Pakistan.
