Priyanka Chopra Jonas is officially returning to Indian films, marking her comeback with one of the most expensive productions in the country. The global star will lead S.S. Rajamouli’s upcoming action-adventure film “Varanasi.”
The announcement was made during a grand launch event in Hyderabad, where Chopra Jonas appeared alongside Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu and Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran.
A Mega-Budget Film
Varanasi is Rajamouli’s first directorial venture since the worldwide hit RRR. The film reportedly carries a massive production budget between ₹1,000 crore and ₹1,300 crore, making it one of the largest-scale projects ever produced in India.
Priyanka plays a character named Mandakini, revealed through a first-look poster showing her in a yellow saree holding a pistol in an intense action setting. The movie is described as a globe-spanning adventure while keeping strong Indian cultural elements.
Varanasi is scheduled for a 2027 release, with an extended post-production timeline to support heavy visual effects.
Six Years Since Her Last Indian Film
Chopra Jonas was last seen in Bollywood in 2019 in The Sky Is Pink. After that, she shifted her entire focus to international projects.
Her recent work includes Amazon Prime Video’s Citadel, The White Tiger, The Matrix Resurrections, and several Hollywood films and shows. She also made history with Quantico, where she became the first South Asian actress to lead an American network drama series.
A Changed Industry
Her return comes at a time when Indian cinema is expanding globally with big budgets, strong marketing, and larger international appeal. Films like Baahubali, RRR, and Pathaan have already proven the worldwide potential of Indian cinema.
Prithviraj Sukumaran, who plays the antagonist in Varanasi, described the project as Rajamouli’s bold new attempt to take Indian cinema to global heights.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s comeback is expected to draw attention both at home and internationally, marking a new phase in her dual-industry career.
