KARACHI: The Sindh Health Department has appointed Prof Dr Khalid Sher as the new executive director of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), marking a significant leadership transition at one of Pakistan’s largest tertiary-care hospitals. The appointment follows a formal selection process undertaken after the position fell vacant due to the passing of former executive director Prof Shahid Rasul.

Rigorous selection from panel of senior professors

According to official sources, the health department finalized the decision after evaluating a panel of three Grade-20 professors shortlisted and recommended by the JPMC administration. Prof Dr Khalid Sher was selected on the basis of seniority, administrative experience, and professional track record.

He will serve as executive director until his retirement in 2029, ensuring continuity and stability in the hospital’s long-term planning, governance, and service delivery.

Focus on continuity and healthcare improvement

Senior hospital officials expressed confidence that the new leadership will help sustain ongoing reforms, expand clinical services, and strengthen administrative efficiency at JPMC. They noted that the institution is currently undergoing major development projects and requires consistent oversight to maintain momentum.

The transition in leadership comes at a pivotal time when JPMC continues to play a vital role in public healthcare, emergency medicine, postgraduate training, research, and specialized patient care for millions of people across Karachi and Sindh.

Institutional stability expected under new leadership

With his appointment, Prof Dr Khalid Sher is expected to oversee:

  • Strengthening tertiary-care services and specialty departments
  • Enhancing training standards for postgraduate medical residents
  • Maintaining continuity in hospital administration and operations
  • Supporting infrastructure upgrades and service expansion
  • Ensuring adherence to patient safety, quality care, and public health mandates

Officials believe that his professional background and familiarity with institutional processes make him well-suited for guiding JPMC’s ongoing development.
