New noise control policy aims to promote peace and curb sound pollution across Punjab
The Punjab government has announced new restrictions on the use of loudspeakers in mosques across the province, limiting their use exclusively to the Azaan (call to prayer). The decision, outlined in an official notification, aims to curb noise pollution and maintain public order in both urban and residential areas.
According to the directive, the use of loudspeakers for sermons, religious gatherings, or other events has been strictly prohibited. Authorities have instructed local administrations and law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
Officials stated that the measure is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to promote peace, reduce noise-related disturbances, and foster interfaith harmony among communities. Violations of the ban may lead to fines or other legal action under the Punjab Sound Systems (Regulation) Act.
The government also urged religious leaders and mosque committees to cooperate in implementing the order responsibly, emphasizing that the restriction is not aimed at limiting religious freedom but ensuring a peaceful environment for all citizens.
This move comes amid growing concerns over excessive noise levels in major cities, where loudspeaker misuse has been cited as a source of disturbance for students, patients, and residents. Environmental experts have welcomed the decision, calling it a positive step toward a cleaner and calmer soundscape in Punjab.
