LAHORE — The Punjab government has finalized plans to roll out a major green transit initiative aimed at curbing environmental pollution and providing the public with affordable commuting options amid soaring fuel prices.

Under the initial phase of the eco-friendly project, the provincial administration will introduce a fleet of 10,000 electric bikes for public rental across Lahore. To support the urban e-mobility network, authorities will establish 300 dedicated docking and charging stations throughout the city. The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA)—collaborating on infrastructure deployment—will provide the necessary land to house these stations, strategically placing them to bridge residential zones, commercial hubs, and existing public transit networks.

Environmental planners expect the deployment to make a measurable dent in Lahore’s seasonal smog crisis, forecasting an annual reduction of thousands of tons of carbon emissions. Built as a modern transit solution for students, working professionals, and daily commuters, the network will allow users to locate, unlock, and pay for the e-bikes seamlessly via a dedicated mobile application. While the digital framework is being finalized, officials have yet to disclose the formal rental pricing structure or clarify whether the billing models will operate on an hourly or flat daily rate.
