A local court has granted a three-day physical remand for two suspects arrested in connection with the alleged honour killing of a 19-year-old married woman in Pirwadhai. The suspects were taken into custody on July 23 for allegedly facilitating the crime.
Area Magistrate Qamar Abbas Tarar presided over the hearing, during which police had sought a five-day remand to advance their investigation. The court instead approved a three-day custody period.
The case revolves around the suspected murder of the young woman, reportedly following a jirga decision. She had allegedly left her home in Fauji Colony on July 11, taking gold jewellery, Rs150,000 in cash, and personal belongings. She is believed to have been murdered on July 16 and secretly buried the next day in a local graveyard.
Responding to reports of a suspicious burial, police launched an investigation and arrested several individuals, including the victim’s relatives, the gravedigger, and the graveyard committee secretary.
Magistrate Tarar has ordered the exhumation of the woman’s body on July 28 to facilitate a post-mortem examination and aid in the forensic investigation.
Sources revealed chilling details of the crime, stating that the woman was allegedly locked in a room and killed in a courtyard in the presence of local community members. Her body was then handed over to female relatives, who reportedly conducted the burial at night in a concealed grave.
The incident has sparked outrage among human rights organizations and international agencies, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Activists have condemned the act as a gross violation of human rights and have called for decisive legal and judicial action against perpetrators of so-called honour killings.
