KARACHI —

The government of Sindh has directed all government and privately run schools and colleges to close down on August 15, 2025 (20 th Safar-1447 A.H.) which marks the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (ra).
A notification by the School Education and Literacy Department said the decision was arrived at by a meeting of the Sub-Committee of the Steering Committee on August 8. Relevant authorities will be required to send the notification and enforce it in all institutions.

Chehlum is the observation of the 40th martyrdom day of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) after the Independence Day of Pakistan (August 14)- a national holiday. Regular weekend (Saturday) and Sunday (August 16 17) after these dates, the people of Sindh would get a long weekend break.

Previously the provincial government had also announced the day of August 9, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of the Urs of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, a venerable Sufi saint and poet.

At the same time schools reopened in Sindh on July 31 following the summer vacation. The Punjab government on the contrary had increased summer vacations in schools till September 1 on account of heat concerns.
