The Sindh government has ruled that public universities cannot increase tuition or other fees without prior approval from provincial authorities, aiming to shield students from rising education costs.
Minister for Universities and Boards, Muhammad Ismail Rahu, stated in Karachi that the move is necessary due to growing concerns over affordability in higher education. He noted that declining federal grants have left public institutions in Sindh under financial pressure, prompting some universities to consider raising fees despite supplementary provincial funding.
Rahu emphasized that the provincial government is committed to supporting the education sector while protecting students from additional financial burdens, aligning with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s vision for public welfare, which includes education and health services.
He also mentioned that a proposal to introduce a new grading system for classes 9 to 12 is under review. Feedback has been collected from multiple education boards, and the system will be implemented once technical issues are resolved.
