Karachi:
The Sindh Home Department has formally requested the federal government to suspend mobile phone and internet services across the province on the occasion of Youm-e-Ashura.
According to official sources, a letter has been sent to the Federal Interior Minister, urging a temporary suspension of mobile and internet networks on 9th and 10th Muharram, particularly along the routes of mourning processions.
The provincial government emphasized that this measure is crucial for maintaining law and order during the sensitive days of Muharram. The letter stated that shutting down communication services in key areas has become a standard security protocol to prevent any untoward incidents, including potential acts of terrorism.
“The closure of mobile and internet services along the routes of Ashura processions is necessary to avoid security breaches and to control any possible misuse of technology by extremist elements,” said a senior official from the Home Department.
Sindh, especially Karachi, has witnessed strict security arrangements in previous years during Muharram, with thousands of police and paramilitary personnel deployed across major cities. The temporary suspension of mobile networks has been a common practice to assist security forces in monitoring the situation effectively.
It is worth mentioning that final approval for service suspension rests with the federal government. A decision is expected soon, as authorities intensify security preparations ahead of the Ashura commemorations.
Meanwhile, security agencies have been directed to stay on high alert, and surveillance operations are being enhanced in sensitive districts.
