WASHINGTON — In a major escalation of the regulatory battle over artificial intelligence, a coalition of technology heavyweights including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and IBM issued a joint public appeal to lawmakers on Friday, vigorously defending open-source AI models. In a signed letter posted on X, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang warned that impending government regulations could stifle fair market competition and inadvertently drive critical technological innovation overseas. The unified push comes amid intensifying debates in both corporate and policy sectors regarding whether powerful AI weights should remain freely accessible to the public or locked behind proprietary closed-source ecosystems controlled by entities like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The defense of open-source technology arrives at a turbulent time for Silicon Valley. Corporate leaders have increasingly bristled at the high recurring costs of closed-source systems, with executives from Microsoft and Palantir Technologies arguing that deployable open models inside private data centers are essential for cost control. Furthermore, standard user restrictions on proprietary models have raised functional concerns; code collaboration platform Hugging Face recently revealed it had to deploy a Chinese open-source model to counter a rogue OpenAI cyberattack because Western closed-source models barred cybersecurity defense workflows. While acknowledging national security concerns and tech-theft anxieties surrounding foreign labs, the coalition argued that closed systems are not inherently safer as they can be secretly breached. Instead, they maintained that open-weight architectures allow the global research community to transparently identify vulnerabilities and collectively improve AI safeguards over time.
