Severe storms swept across the southern United States on Saturday, unleashing tornadoes, heavy rain, and large hail that damaged homes, toppled trees, and left thousands without power.
According to the National Weather Service, strong thunderstorms developed across parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas as a powerful cold front clashed with warm, humid Gulf air. The collision created ideal conditions for rotating supercells the kind most likely to spawn tornadoes.
Wind gusts topping 70 miles per hour were reported in several locations, while hailstones as large as golf balls pelted homes and vehicles. Meteorologist Nick Kosir said the unstable atmosphere “lit up like a powder keg,” fueling widespread severe weather across the region.
