Pakistani immigrants across the United States are living in growing fear following President Donald Trump’s latest executive orders intensifying deportations of undocumented migrants. The move, part of his “Protecting the American People Against Invasion” initiative, allows officials to deport individuals without court hearings if they fail to prove two years of continuous US residence.

The new immigration crackdown has left many Pakistani nationals anxious about their future, including 48-year-old Mushtaq Ahmad*, who came to the US last year seeking a stable life. “If I’m deported, everything will go back to zero. I’ll have nothing,” he said, describing how he now avoids public spaces out of fear of arrest by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Ahmad, a former truck driver from the Middle East, spent $16,000 on his journey to the US, hoping to secure better opportunities for his six children. However, the dream quickly turned into uncertainty as Trump’s policies reshaped the immigration landscape. “Friends said life in the US was full of jobs and money, but now everyone like me regrets coming,” he added.

Under the new executive order, ICE has expanded its powers and operations. Recent figures show detention numbers rising to 59,762 nationwide a sharp increase compared to averages during the Biden administration. Civil rights groups argue the expansion violates constitutional due process and fosters an atmosphere of intimidation among immigrant communities.

Human Impact

“I wake up every day wondering, will this be the day?” Ahmad said. “It’s like walking on a tightrope without a safety net.” His lawyer has advised him to avoid airports and public transport hubs, where ICE checks are common.

Even immigrants with legal documents feel uneasy. “I have a green card and pay my taxes,” said Massachusetts based Pakistani-American Ainy Agha, “but the fear is real. These raids target undocumented people, but the uncertainty affects everyone.”

Business owners report economic fallout in immigrant heavy neighborhoods. Tariq Khan*, a transportation entrepreneur in Virginia, said job applications and spending have plummeted. “We expected Trump to boost the economy, but fear is killing our workforce,” he explained. “People aren’t working or spending they’re hiding.”

Legal Challenges and Backlash

Trump’s immigration actions have sparked a wave of lawsuits from civil rights organizations. Courts have already blocked parts of his agenda, including his attempt to revoke birthright citizenship. A federal judge criticized the administration for showing “willful disregard” of earlier rulings.

Reports from the American Immigration Council claim that ICE enforcement has violated the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments infringing on free speech, privacy, and due process rights. As deportations climb and fear spreads, many Pakistani immigrants find themselves in limbo torn between hope for a better future and fear of being forced to leave it all behind.
