Taiwan was hit hard by Typhoon Fung-wong on Wednesday forcing the evacuation of over 8,000 people as torrential rain triggered neck-deep floods across eastern regions.
The weakened storm dumped record-breaking rainfall on the coastal county of Yilan, where more than 1,000 homes were inundated. In Suao, a small harbor town, nearly 648 mm (25 inches) of rain fell within a day the highest ever recorded for November.
Schools and businesses remained closed across southern Taiwan, while at least 51 people sustained injuries. Rescue teams, including army units, waded through deep floodwaters to reach stranded residents.
“It rained so much, so fast, the drainage just couldn’t handle it” said fisherman Hung Chunyi whose home’s first floor was submerged overnight.
