Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man, the third Benoit Blanc film, takes an unexpected turn by placing religion at the center of its mystery. Daniel Craig returns as Blanc, a morally driven yet openly atheist detective, who becomes entangled in a murder case inside a Catholic church. The story revolves around Father Judd Duplenticy, a sincere young priest, and Monsignor Wicks, a corrupt church leader found murdered during service.
Rather than being a traditional whodunit, the film explores how religion is practiced, misused, and lived sincerely. Through Blanc’s logical skepticism and Father Judd’s genuine faith, the movie presents two moral perspectives, making it less about Christianity itself and more about leadership, compassion, and redemption.
