A new study has warned that particles released from single use plastic utensils can reach the brain and cause symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s disease.
Growing evidence from studies has highlighted that micro- and nano-plastic particles are widespread in the environment and regularly enter the human body through food, water, and air.
According to the new research published in Environmental Research Communications, these tiny plastic particles were found in all body systems, including the brain, where they accumulate and may lead to Alzheimer’s like conditions.
Previous research had revealed that microplastic particles can pass through the blood brain barrier a protective shield that keeps the brain safe from harmful compounds such as viruses and bacteria.
The latest study examined the impact of these plastic particles crossing the barrier on brain health.
It was found that the accumulation of these particles can lead to cognitive decline and even Alzheimer’s disease, especially in individuals with genetic risk factors.
