SUKKUR: A departmental inquiry has confirmed that five police officials of the SITE Police Station in Sukkur staged a fake encounter in which a university student, Nasrullah Mangrejo, was shot in the knee after being kept in illegal custody for 24 hours.

The inquiry, ordered by Sukkur Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, retired Captain Faisal Abdullah Chachar, found that Mangrejo, a third-year microbiology student at Shah Abdul Latif University in Khairpur, had no criminal record and was wrongfully targeted. Following the findings, the DIG directed the Sukkur SSP Azhar Khan Mughal to lodge a case against the involved policemen.

The officers named in the inquiry include ASIs Abdur Rehman Shaikh and Shahzaib Shaikh, Head Constable Rajjal Khan, and Constables Jawed Ahmed and Roshan Ali. An FIR (No. 124/2025) was filed on July 7 at the SITE Police Station. The original police version of events, detailed in a separate FIR (No. 114/2025), which claimed Mangrejo was injured in an encounter, was declared false and placed under ‘B-class’ (bogus).

Mangrejo had gone missing after leaving home to attend a 5th Muharram procession. His family filed a missing person report but the police initially denied detaining him. The next day, police claimed he was wounded in an encounter and brought him to Sukkur Civil Hospital. Disbelieving the account, the victim’s family staged a protest at the hospital and demanded an impartial investigation.

DIG Chachar confirmed that the inquiry involved testimonies from Mangrejo’s family, the accused police personnel, and their colleagues. He stated that Mangrejo’s call data records and all background checks confirmed he had no criminal links.

While the DIG ordered the errant officers to bear the cost of Mangrejo’s medical treatment, he ruled out any departmental compensation. The victim’s father, Habibullah Mangrejo, also questioned why higher-ranking officers, including multiple SHOs and a DSP allegedly involved, were not held accountable in the report.
