ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of rising health risks from mosquitoes and other seasonal insects during the ongoing monsoon. In its latest advisory, the NDMA said these insects can transmit dangerous viruses, leading to illnesses such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya which together claim around one million lives globally each year.

The authority urged people to take preventive steps, including removing stagnant rainwater from rooftops, containers, water tanks, and flowerpots to stop mosquito breeding. It also advised seeking immediate medical care in case of fever, body aches, or headaches.

The NDMA stressed that proactive action is key to preventing outbreaks during the rainy season. The warning comes alongside earlier alerts for possible floods and glacial lake outburst floods in parts of Gilgit Baltistan, Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kumrat Valley.
