Bilawal Seeks Bill Relief, Unity for Punjab’s Flood Hit Farmers

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has urged the federal government to waive electricity bills for farmers and families devastated by recent floods in Punjab. Visiting flood hit districts on Monday, he called the situation an “agricultural emergency” that demands urgent state support.

Speaking to reporters in Muzaffargarh, Bilawal stressed that financial assistance should be delivered through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), a system previously used to aid citizens during the 2022 floods and the COVID-19 crisis. He also pressed the Foreign Office and UN agencies to mobilize international aid for relief and rehabilitation.

Appealing for political unity, the PPP leader asked all parties to put aside rivalries to confront what he described as an unprecedented national disaster. However, when questioned about the shortage of boats, life jackets, and flood camps, he admitted there were gaps but insisted the state was “trying its best.”

The monsoon floods have already claimed more than 900 lives, ruined standing crops, and displaced thousands across Punjab and Sindh. Authorities warn that water levels in the Indus River may rise further in the coming days, with high flows expected at Guddu barrage.
