Explosions in Doha as Israel Claims Strike on Hamas Leadership

Explosions in Doha as Israel Claims Strike on Hamas Leadership

Doha, Qatar — September 9, 2025

A series of explosions shook Doha on Tuesday, with eyewitnesses reporting blasts and columns of smoke rising over the Katara district of the Qatari capital. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later confirmed it had carried out what it called a “precise strike” against the senior leadership of Hamas.

The IDF, along with Israel’s internal security agency Shin Bet, said the operation was based on “accurate intelligence” and aimed to avoid civilian casualties. The statement did not specify the names of those targeted, but Israeli media reported that the strike was directed at top Hamas officials, including political leader Khalil al-Hayya and members of the group’s negotiating delegation in Doha.

Hamas, through a source quoted by Al Jazeera, claimed that its delegation involved in ceasefire talks was the focus of the attack. The group has maintained a political presence in Doha for years, using Qatar as a base for indirect negotiations with Israel and mediators.

The incident marks a dramatic escalation in the ongoing Israel–Hamas conflict. By striking in Qatar—a Gulf state that has long positioned itself as a mediator in Middle East disputes—Israel has expanded the battlefield beyond Gaza and the region. Analysts warn the move could jeopardize ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire and hostage release agreement.

Casualty figures have not yet been confirmed. Qatari authorities have not issued an immediate statement.

The explosions come at a sensitive moment, as international diplomats intensify pressure for a truce. Qatar, backed by the United States, has been a key channel for talks between Israel and Hamas. Any disruption to its mediation efforts could complicate peace negotiations further.

For now, Doha remains tense, with residents reeling from a strike that has brought the war into the heart of a country once seen as a neutral ground for dialogue.
