Premier directs ministries to set targets, emphasises private sector’s role in economic growth

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday instructed authorities to prepare a comprehensive roadmap and reform agenda aimed at promoting trade and investment across Pakistan’s key economic sectors.

Chairing a high-level meeting via Zoom from London, the premier stressed the importance of agriculture, information technology, minerals, tourism, and renewable energy as priority areas that could attract substantial foreign investment.

“Along with investment, promoting trade is central to our government’s policy to significantly enhance exports,” he said, adding that all ministries had been given clear targets to utilise resources efficiently and ensure timely completion of ongoing projects.

The prime minister directed ministers to identify feasible projects and take swift measures to implement them. He further underlined that reforms and planning must be future-oriented to ensure steady and organised progress.

Highlighting the role of the private sector, PM Shehbaz said its active participation would be pivotal in achieving Pakistan’s economic roadmap. “Our ongoing reform policies have given a new direction to the economy. With transparency and innovation, the country is now moving firmly on the path of development,” he remarked.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Musadik Malik (Environment), Ali Pervez Malik (Petroleum), Muhammad Jehanzeb (Finance), Jam Kamal (Commerce), Attaullah Tarar (Information), and Ahad Khan Cheema (Economic Affairs).

The directives come as PM Shehbaz arrived in the UK following the signing of a historic mutual defence pact with Saudi Arabia. He is now set to lead Pakistan’s delegation at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which begins today.

During his visit to the US, the premier will join a select group of Islamic leaders in a meeting with US President Donald Trump to discuss regional and global peace and security. At the UNGA, he will also call on the international community to address prolonged occupations and the denial of self-determination to the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Palestine.

In addition to his UNGA address, PM Shehbaz will attend several high-level engagements, including meetings of the UN Security Council, the Global Development Initiative (GDI), and a special event on Climate Action, alongside bilateral meetings with world leaders.
