KARACHI: The number of dengue cases in Karachi has surged, raising health concerns across Sindh. According to the Sindh Health Department, a total of 59 new cases were reported in various districts of Karachi during September, bringing the province-wide tally to more than 557 confirmed cases so far in 2025.

Karachi identified as major hot spot

Karachi East recorded the highest number of infections with 117 confirmed cases, followed by Karachi Central with 97 cases. Health authorities also reported 18 cases from Hyderabad division in September. Sporadic cases have been confirmed in Tharparkar and Mirpurkhas districts, showing that the outbreak is no longer confined to Karachi alone.

One confirmed death reported

The Sindh Health Department has confirmed one death linked to dengue fever this year, further intensifying concerns about the outbreak’s impact on public health.

Seasonal changes drive spike in cases

Officials have attributed the spike in dengue cases to seasonal changes, rising humidity, and increased breeding of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The Sindh government has issued an official health alert and urged citizens to adopt strict preventive measures, including:

  • Eliminating stagnant water from homes and surroundings
  • Using mosquito repellents and bed nets
  • Wearing long-sleeved clothing, especially during dawn and dusk
  • Seeking medical help immediately if fever or symptoms appear

Health authorities have also intensified fogging and fumigation drives in Karachi’s high-risk neighborhoods to curb mosquito breeding and prevent further transmission.

This surge in dengue cases highlights the urgent need for public awareness, community participation, and timely action to control the spread of this vector-borne disease.
