LONDON: Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, has issued a rare and urgent warning to members of parliament (MPs), cautioning them that spies from China, Russia, and Iran are actively targeting them in efforts to undermine UK democracy.
The warning follows the collapse of a recent trial involving two British men accused of spying for China, after prosecutors dropped the case due to the government’s failure to provide evidence proving that China posed a threat to national security.
MI5 Chief Sir Ken McCallum said foreign intelligence operations aim to steal sensitive information, manipulate democratic systems, and influence political decisions through deceptive means such as blackmail, phishing attacks, or donations.
“When foreign states steal vital UK information or manipulate our democratic processes, they don’t just harm our short-term security they weaken the very foundations of our sovereignty,” McCallum stated.
The agency urged MPs and their aides to remain vigilant, advising them to track unusual social interactions, avoid private meetings with unfamiliar individuals, and be wary of flattery or excessive friendliness that could mask ulterior motives.
McCallum reminded lawmakers of their duty to protect democracy, saying: “Everyone reading this guidance cares deeply about their role in UK democracy. Take action today to protect it and yourself.”
This is not the first time MI5 has sounded the alarm about foreign interference. In 2022, the agency identified Christine Lee, a British lawyer, as allegedly conducting political influence activities on behalf of China’s Communist Party by making donations to UK politicians. Lee denied wrongdoing and later sued MI5, but lost her case.
While Prime Minister Keir Starmer has sought to ease tensions with Beijing since taking office, mutual accusations of espionage between the two nations continue. British security services have repeatedly warned of China’s attempts to infiltrate UK’s political and business sectors, while China’s embassy in London dismissed the recent espionage claims as “fabricated and malicious slander.”
