KARACHI — An oil tanker grounded off the coast of the Arabian Sea is leaking fuel, putting fragile turtle nesting grounds and migratory bird habitats at immediate risk.

The vessel, which ran aground during rough weather late Tuesday, has developed a breach in its hull. Local maritime authorities confirmed that a slick is already visible, spreading toward the protected shoreline. Environmentalists warn the timing is catastrophic, as the region is currently in the middle of the nesting season for endangered green sea turtles.

“The crude is moving toward the beaches where these turtles lay their eggs,” said a marine biologist monitoring the spill. “If the oil coats the sand, it can suffocate eggs and create a toxic barrier for hatchlings. We are looking at a potential ecological collapse for this nesting site.”

The spill isn’t just a threat to marine life. The coastline serves as a critical stopover for thousands of migratory birds traveling the Central Asian Flyway. Ornithologists fear that birds landing in the slick will suffer from feather matting, leading to hypothermia and ingestion of toxic sludge during preening.

Local cleanup crews are struggling to contain the spread. High swells and strong currents are hampering the deployment of containment booms, leaving the shoreline vulnerable. While the ship’s operator claims they have activated an emergency response plan, the visible oil reaching the surf suggests otherwise.

Government officials have yet to announce a timeline for the vessel’s extraction or a plan to clean the affected beaches. For now, the focus remains on the tides, which carry the environmental cost of the accident further down the coast with every passing hour.

The long-term impact on the area’s biodiversity will likely remain unknown for weeks, but for the nesting turtles currently in the sand, the danger is measured in days.
