Swiss Scientists Say 1.5°C Climate Target Now Impossible

Ten years after the Paris Agreement, Swiss climate experts no longer believe the world can limit warming to 1.5°C.

In a new survey by Swissinfo, 95% of researchers said the target is unrealistic. Most now expect global temperatures to rise by around 2.5°C by 2100.

ETH Zurich professor Harald Bugmann called that figure “realistic,” warning that global efforts to cut emissions have stalled.

The World Meteorological Organization reports that 2024 was the first year the global average temperature exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

For Switzerland, which is warming twice as fast as the global average, the impact could be severe  with glacier loss above 90%, more frequent heatwaves, and low-altitude ski resorts disappearing by century’s end.
