Nigeria has firmly rejected former US President Donald Trump’s claim that Christians in the country are facing an “existential threat.”

In a detailed post on X, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said Nigeria’s constitution protects all faiths and that the nation remains committed to religious freedom and tolerance. “The portrayal of Nigeria as religiously intolerant doesn’t reflect reality,” Tinubu wrote, emphasizing ongoing cooperation between Christian and Muslim leaders since 2023.

Trump, in a Saturday post, alleged that “radical Islamists” were killing thousands of Christians in Nigeria and warned of potential US military action. Tinubu dismissed the remarks as misleading, reiterating that Nigeria “opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.”

While extremist violence has affected parts of Nigeria, reports indicate both Christian and Muslim communities have been targeted in recent attacks.
